So here we are back in the Zone for another Mezze of Black Music.
This week Peter Nero treats us to a great instrumental to start our journey.
First some fine R&B flavours, including the original version of You Don’t Love Me by Willie Cobb made famous by Dawn Penn. In direct response to James Brown’s message of “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud” (1968), Cobbs wryly observed that Brown was a millionaire by that point, as Cobbs retort was “Sing It Low – I’m Black and I’m Poor”.
Other highlights along the way are the Mighty Ryeders, Natasha Watts and The Pipe.
Another brand new tune from Dele Sosimi. A dark ditty from Granada’s Calagad 13. An amazing remix from Hippo Sound System of Onipa’s Free Up Your Mind leads us into Bill Laswell an interesting musician who has worked with many people over the years. He has been involved in thousands of recordings with many collaborators from all over the world. His music draws from funk, world music, jazz, dub and ambient styles. Bill co wrote and produced Herbie Hancocks 1982 hit Rockit. Bill also produced albums for Sly and Robbie, Mick Jagger, PiL, Motörhead, Ramones, Iggy Pop and Yoko Ono.
He also worked with Bootsy Collins the artist on our penultimate track in this week’s MoBoZonE.
Finally Michael Kiwanuka serenades us out with Cold Little Heart.
